Your dental health is important, and our patients’ safety is our top priority.
We want to assure you of the measures we take to maintain a clean and safe environment so you can continue to receive needed dental care without fear or concern. We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation and all CDC guidelines very closely.
We owe our tooth color to genetics and light — the light reflected off the hard outer enamel and the color of the soft inner material within combine to give us a radiant smile. But if you’ve noticed a yellowish tinge to your teeth, fluorescent lighting in your surroundings might not be to blame.
Our tooth color changes over time for a variety of reasons. That’s why people who spoke to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry listed whiter teeth as their top concern about their smiles.
Our office in Yonkers has two ways to whiten your smile and boost your confidence. You can relax in our office and walk out with a brighter smile in less than an hour, or enjoy the privacy and convenience of a professional-strength take-home product that will give you dramatic results in as little as five days.
Why Whiten Your Teeth?
Your smile and your natural tooth color are as unique as your fingerprints. Although light plays a big part in reflecting our tooth color, some people genetically have thinner tooth enamel, allowing more of the tooth’s soft and creamy inner material, called the dentin, to show.
As we age, everyone’s enamel grows thinner, and the dentin turns more yellow. The yellowish dentin becomes more predominant for other reasons, too, such as tooth decay or an injury to your tooth.
But even if you brush and floss regularly, other factors contribute to discoloring our teeth. For instance:
That daily caffeine takes a toll. Drinks with intense color pigments such as coffee, tea, and cola can stain teeth. So can red wine and foods with similar strong pigmentation.
Certain medications and medical treatments can darken teeth as a side effect. These include high blood pressure medicine, antihistamines, antipsychotics, some antibiotics, radiation, and chemotherapy.
If you smoke or use tobacco products, the tar and nicotine you’re exposed to will discolor and stain your teeth.
Whitening your teeth can take years off your appearance. It’s wise to do this before you have any restorative dental work, such as a bridge, crown, veneer, or dentures, however. These fixtures resist staining, so they’re not susceptible to whitening treatments. But having your teeth whitened before being fitted for these ensures that they’ll match your newly brightened smile.
Opalescence Boost: Whiten Your Teeth in a Day
Relax in our Yonkers office while the Opalescence Boost Teeth Whitening system works its magic in as little as 20 minutes. Opalescence Boost is a chemically activated method that uses no hot, uncomfortable lighting, so your teeth won’t be extra sensitive once you’re finished. The tooth-whitening gel contains 40 percent hydrogen peroxide, along with potassium nitrate and fluoride, two ingredients that research shows minimize sensitivity, harden your natural tooth enamel, and help reduce cavities.
After we determine the current shade of your teeth and your whitening goal, we’ll protect your lips, tongue, and gum line from the gel with special mouth guards and a gentle resin barrier. Then we’ll brush the gel on to your teeth. After 20 minutes, we’ll remove the gel to check the progress. If your teeth aren’t yet as white as you’d like, we’ll apply the gel again for another 20 minutes. Then you should be good to go. You’ll leave our office with a significantly brighter smile.
GLO®: Whiten Teeth at Home or On the Go
If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth at home with a professional-strength product, our office in Yonkers also carries the patented GLO teeth whitening system. This method uses gentle heat and light in an enclosed mouthpiece over short intervals of time, so your teeth won’t feel any lasting sensitivity.
After brushing and flossing, you’ll treat your lips with the lip balm provided in your GLO whitening kit. Each kit includes premixed vials of 9 percent hydrogen peroxide, enough to last up to ten days of treatment. Brush a pea-size amount onto your teeth, then bite into the kit’s mouthpiece. The mouthpiece attaches to a remote, which uses the light and heat to activate and accelerate the whitening process.
The remote comes with a lanyard, so you can wear it comfortably during treatment. With GLO, you’ll cycle through four eight-minute treatments a day over five days to see your teeth turn an average of five shades brighter. You can repeat the treatment for up to ten days.
