Tooth Crowns in Yonkers

Tooth Crowns: What Are They?

A tooth crown is a replacement for tooth enamel that has been destroyed by cavities, worn away, or chipped off. Crowns may also be used to correct cosmetic defects such as an unusually shaped tooth or discoloration. Keep in mind that crowns are not the same as fillings. Crowns are used when the damage to the tooth is too severe to be treated with a filling. Crowns are also distinct from dental bridges, although they are used to support a dental bridge in some cases.

Can Any Dentist Do Crowns?

It’s rare to find a dentist who doesn’t do crowns. The dentists at our practice have performed everything from a simple front tooth crown to extensive molar crowning procedures. Make an appointment with us if you would like to learn more about the broad range of dental services we offer.

What Are Some Common Dental Crown Materials?

Metal amalgam was once the only material used in crowns for teeth, and it is still in use today. Most people picture a gold crown tooth when they think of metal crowns, but the material is actually a mixture of gold and several other metals. These metals are carefully chosen for their strength, low thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance.

Porcelain crowns are an aesthetic alternative to metal amalgam. They usually cannot be spotted by a casual observer. Porcelain is a durable form of ceramic that can be made into a smooth, natural tooth crown. Ceramic crowns provide another option for patients who have a sensitivity to metal amalgam.

In some cases, patients can get the best of both worlds with a hybrid between a ceramic crown and a metal crown. The metal portion of the crown bonds to the tooth while the ceramic covers the outside for a natural appearance.

What Is the Price for a Dental Crown?

It is difficult to estimate the cost of getting a tooth crown in Yonkers without a dental exam. However, the two biggest influences are the size of the crown and the substance used to create it. To get the most precise estimate of the dental crown cost, schedule an examination with one of our dentists. We may also be able to work with your insurance company to reduce the out-of-pocket cost to you.

How the Dental Crowning Process Works

The dental crown procedure requires some removal of tooth enamel to provide a mating surface for the dental cement that will later be used to attach the permanent crown to your tooth. Once the dentist completes this surface preparation, he or she will fit your tooth with a provisional tooth cap made of plastic or steel.
Meanwhile, the permanent caps will be created by dental technicians in a laboratory. These technicians work from a mold that the dentist will take of the tooth. When the crown is finished, it will be sent to the dentist’s office. The dentist will then apply a small amount of dental cement and put in the crown.
